Give Me Give Me A Blazer After Midnight

A few blog posts back, I wrote about my best mate Janelle and a blazer that she had given me.

With the cooler weather, I've finally had a chance to wear it!

Lately my boyfriend has been calling me his "shamble" girlfriend. At the moment, everything in my life seems to be going wrong. Not big, life changing things - but about a million little things. A lot of it has to do with being disorganized and prioritizing the wrong things, but then there's other mishaps - like being two hours late for an engagement party because the shower wouldn't shut off (I'm talking full-pelt, boiling water). Lately is seems like my life has been in a total state of disorder. This blog post was no exception. I have been so busy lately, so my blog has taken a backseat. I was so excited to finally be taking some photos again, when it started POURING down with rain 20 seconds into our session. My boyfriend and I legged it to the nearest shelter (a Supercheap Auto shop), where I stood shivering and dripping wet, my freshly washed and straightened hair dripping around my face.

So long story short, I only got three decent photos, all from the same angle, of this outfit. I usually check over the photos before we leave our "shooting location" as well, and had I done that, these photos would have have been retaken with my petticoat adjusted so it is not showing (there's a whole 3 inches of lace showing that shouldn't be). Well, shit happens.

Now about the outfit. It's a genuine vintage 80s blazer, size 18. The turtleneck skater dress is from ASOS, the standard range, size 18. Very stretchy. My boots are Docs of course. My tights are from the Razzamattaz Curvaceous range (size 2), but they went into the bin later that day because they kept falling down and I got a ladder in them. I'm giving up on this brand for good. The City Chic tights are lovely to wear, and soon I'll be placing a few online orders and trying some other brands (Sonsee and We Love Colors spring to mind).

What is your favourite brand for plus size tights?

Aussie Curves: Boho Look 2

The outfit I wore for the last Aussie Curves Boho week, is still my favourite outfit post on my blog, like EVER. I don't wear a lot of boho in general, but I love the look and I have a few favourite outfits that I always go back to. I wear this dress to work when it's really hot because it's not lined and is a nice breathing fabric.

Aussie Curves: Retro

Although I'm not wearing any genuine retro clothing in this post, there's something 50s chic about a pair of high-waisted shorts with a pussy-bow top and heels. I've been trying to step out of my comfort zone and wear more shorts as the weather warms up. I really think City Chic have nailed shorts this season. These ones pictured are so comfortable and fit so nicely!

Aussie Curves: Pink

I spent a few hours in Savers thrift store last week and found this bold maxi skirt for $5. The best thing about thrifting is that on the odd occasion, when you find a brand new dress you love in the stores for $160, you don't feel so guilty putting it on layby (not saying I did that *winky face*). The beautiful fifties babe with me is my sister Chelsea, whose pink and orange jacket is a genuine vintage item. We just returned from a shopping trip where she bought this Ted Baker bag. Perfect match, right? I'm sure you can agree that it was the perfect unplanned moment to take photos for Aussie Curves "Pink" week and include her! Personally I think she could write a fashion blog herself. She has a gorgeous sense of style.

Aussie Curves: $50 Outfit

I would usually wear this outfit with stockings, but since I just got my "Jersey Shore" fake tan, I decided to get my tanny chops out.

This jacket was an absolute bargain - $5 at a car boot sale. The brand is Jump Clothing, which I don't know much about. It fits like a dream. My boyfriend found the boots at a Salvos for $10. We have the same sized feet, so it's very easy for him to buy me shoes when I'm not around. We share our Doc Martins quite often! The basic black t-shirt tunic is City Chic, $29.95. The necklace and ring were gifts. So that brings my outfit to a whopping $44.95. Close enough!

I quite like this theme because I enjoy thrifting and I'd really like to get into it more. It's a much more ethical and sustainable way to shop, which has been on my mind a little bit lately.

Aussie Curves: Feminine

To look at my outfit, I suppose it's not very feminine. But to be honest, when I pondered this theme, this jacket was the first thing I thought of. Unusual, yes, but what can I say - I'm a feminist that likes to question social norms and gender associations.

When I think of women I admire (and the kind of qualities I'd like to have), I think of strength, intelligence, independence, confidence and gumption. What better to communicate those qualities than an army jacket; an item that symbolises bravery and strength.

Plus size women who dress as they please, proudly display their bodies in fatkinis, educate themselves (and others) on what true health means, are wonderful wives and mothers, confident and creative thinkers who pave the way for a generation of women bound by crippling beauty standards...now that's what I call kick-ass femininity worth celebrating! Gimme me a side order of that shit!

So without further ado, here I am in my army jacket, saying a F**K YOU to a society that says femininity is a non-fat, Abercrombie and Fitch wearing, non-stretch marked, hairless, tanned, straight toothed, thigh-gapped, soy-latte sipping doll-faced poppet. Girl, I ain't got nothing against you but I can rock my X chromosome just fine!

Aussie Curves: Celebrate

This month, Modish Maracas hit its first birthday! That's right, I have been blogging for one year now.  I've had LOTS of wines this week to celebrate (eek!). Starting this blog was one of the best things I have ever done. Not only has it been a creative outlet, a confidence booster and something to look forward to - it has also launched me into the Aussie Curves community and connected me to other fashion-forward, plus size babes! I'd like to thank Danimezza for beginning this genius and empowering movement, and also all the other Aussie Curves babes who have given me the time of day, read my posts and taken precious minutes to write lovely comments. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Unfortunately I missed the last two Aussie Curves challenges due to hectic work and a nasty cold/cough. It was hard to have to let it go, as I hadn't missed any of the challenges since I started. It's so nice to be writing this and have some photos to upload this time!

Purple is one of my favourite colours, so I've gone with a bit of a "purple haze" look here.
