Aussie Curves: Animalistic

I wore this outfit late night shopping tonight. I went into Best and Less to buy my favourite knickers, got to the counter to line up and realised that one of my students from last year was serving. Deciding not to subject the two of us to the embarrassment, I promptly returned my four pairs of size 22 control briefs and made a swift exit. I have to admit, I was pretty annoyed about it though. Yep, I get super excited about new knickers.

So about the outfit. I'm wearing my Jurassic TART t-shirt, as my boyfriend calls it. I bought it around the time that Jurassic Park was released in 3D. I was pretty excited about it, teehee.

Thought I'd throw that last one in for good measure. The boyf asked me to pretend I was a t-rex trying to scratch my face. So yeah. That's what I'm doing there.

Bye!! xx

Aussie Curves: Double Take

I don't have a uniform for the daily grind, and I work with teenagers, so coming up with refreshing yet comfortable outfits everyday and knowing you're being watched by fashion-conscious (and sometimes judging) teens can be a real challenge. Add heat to that equation and some mornings it's nothing short of a nightmare. Over the last few months of summer, my solution to that has been some basic cotton black dresses and styling them differently. I have a Best and Less t-shirt dress that I thrash, and this Autograph Fashion tank maxi dress has been my latest favourite. It also comes in blue, which is tempting! The fabric is so cool and soft. The air conditioning at work is also questionable in some rooms, so staying cool is something I give a lot of thought and planning to. I even bought a pen from Typo with a fan on the end!

I've styled the dress with tan and rose gold accessories for this take. I am so in love with rose gold at the moment. My latest obsession!

In these next photos, I've styled the dress with denim and white for a more casual look.

Well I hope you enjoyed my "double take" and picked up some handy hints on how to make the most out of those staple pieces! Until next time! xx

From Babelicious to Goodbye Eyebrows!

I had seen this dress in the occasional Instagram photo and was always quite amazed at how beautifully it photographed. The colours in the dress are just stunning.

At the time I took these photos, it was so bright and it seemed to take a lot of editing to get them to look right. The photos looked faded out and discoloured, which was really disappointing because I knew the dress could photograph well.

I got it in the City Chic sales for $40. Such a great price! I wore it to a wedding where I was to DJ, hence the heavy Doc Marten boots (foot safety is very important when you have to load in heavy gear!).

With a bit of orange lippy and rose gold jewelry, I felt totally babelicious in this dress! Of course, after half an hour of lugging heavy speakers up a flight of stairs in the glaring sun, I felt more like a drowned rat; my eyebrows had dripped down my face and the foundation on my forehead was long gone....sigh. What's a girl to do?

Thanks for reading! xx

Dear 16 Year Old Sophie

Dear 16 Year Old Sophie,

One day you will be 29, but you’ll still have a ridiculously loud laugh and a considerable amount of chub (sorry about that), and you’ll be happy. I have a few things I’d like to let you in on.

The next few years living with mum, dad and Shaun will be rough, but things get totally rad when you rent a unit on the beach with Janelle and Ali. You’ll be apprehensive about Ali at first because you don’t really know her, but you’ll become great friends and her influence will change your opinion and views on something that will allow someone pretty special to enter your life (more on that later). The single life with these babes will be fucking amazing.

You won’t ever be skinny, so get over “the fantasy of being thin” and focus on accepting and loving yourself. You will find a form of exercise you like and gradually make steps toward a healthier you. Don’t start smoking when you drink, because you’ll really, really like it and find the habit difficult to shake. Oh, and the words, “When I lose weight I will…” are the most toxic and limiting words you can say to yourself. You can. NOW. And you will…

Ditch the baggy Disney t-shirts and cargo pants combo. I know it’s the 90s, but you can totally rock a crop top. This awkward stage will go for a lot longer than the average teenage girl because of your size, but that will pass and you’ll sure as hell make up for lost time. That pair of vintage Doc Marten T-bars you’re about to buy (because they’re the only shoes in the boutique that fit your size 11 feet) are the first really sound fashion decision you make. Go you! Don’t despair the lack of cute clothes in your size. Things get better. More options become available. Remember those tears you cried in the David Jones changing room? Yeah well – one day you will have a fashion blog because of ALL THE PRETTY THINGS! Astonishing, right? There will come a day when plus size women will find their style and confidence. Be patient.

Don’t take church so seriously – it’s not your part time job. Right now it’s your “everything” and one day you will realize that you threw your life into it because it allowed you to hide from a world you were fearful of. Keep your faith close to your heart, don’t allow yourself to be pressured by church leaders and always, ALWAYS think for yourself. Listen to your instincts. If your favourite band comes to town on a Friday night, skip youth group (STOMP was it?) and go. You’ll regret those lost opportunities.

You will experience a few years of unemployment throughout university that will get you down a bit, but don’t stress – you’ll end up with a few casual jobs to juggle. Mum is right – you’ll ditch the social work and become a teacher, but you’ll also delve into some other arenas too! I have to leave a few surprises…

You think about sex quite a bit and feel guilty because only boys think about sex that much. You’ll soon learn how bullshit that is and that your thoughts are perfectly normal and healthy and one day you will grieve the amount of time you felt guilty for things you believed were sinful (which aren’t).

Keep reading! It’s your lifeblood. Lori Wick is not the only good author, though. And get your hands on some feminist material. It will make you a better person in a hundred different ways.

Don’t stress about romance. Guys at church don’t look at you, so you worry about not being the “Brooke Fraser” type of girl. I know you feel undesirable most of the time, but you’ll unleash your inner bombshell eventually (and kiss lots of boys). And best of all – you will meet THE BOY - a really sweet one, who is obsessed with cars and sticking googly eyes on things and YOU. He’ll be cheeky and fun and make you laugh all the time.

You and your sister Chelsea end up being pretty close (your boyfriends will get along great too). You won’t mind hanging out with Shaun and your relationship with your mum and dad end up being pretty rad.

At this moment, when you walk into a room full of people, you look around and you wonder, with apprehension, if they will like you. Now, when you walk into a room full of people, you wonder if you will like them. Because you are the shit (in a totally healthy, self-love kind of way, haha!).

Love, 29 Year Old Sophie

Aussie Curves: Breaking The Rules

Today, I decided to wear horizontal stripes.

When I was a chubby youngster, I distinctly remember a cousin saying on a shopping trip, "Big girls shouldn't wear horizontal stripes. They make you look bigger." That stuck in my brain FOR YEARS. I avoided stripes from then on like every good fatty should.

Until today.

Warning! Bad fatty up ahead!

skirt: lily & lou via best and less || crop top: living doll via david jones || shoes: spendless

If we're going to be really picky, I'm probably breaking at least three well known fatty fashion rules - I'm sleeveless, wearing horizontal stripes, and my midriff is on display. It's also 45 degrees today, and so the choice to not suffer under a bolero or sleeves in a wise one, I should think! Truth be told, I felt like a total babe in this outfit. It's pretty casual in comparison to my other blog posts, so I hope you're not too bored, dear readers. It was also a bargain - the top was on sale, only $13. The maxi skirt $20. Sweet as.

Aussie Beach Babes #2

I've noticed that swimsuits with cutouts are a bit of a trend this summer. I love this cutout one-piece because it's a great mix of sexy and edgy, and great for building your way up to a bikini if you're a little body-shy. I have to admit, I felt a little bashful in this swimsuit at first, but I'm starting to warm up to the style and embrace the sexy vibe!

swimsuit: Swimsuits For All (here) || sarong: seafolly || necklace & ring: lovisa

The swimsuit has a great structure, feels supportive and the little details like the belt and neck clip make it so lovely to wear. I feel so glam in it. I wore it with my Seafolly sarong and whipped it off for a quick dip. I don't usually wear one-piece swimsuits like this, so the cover up helped me to build up my confidence before I was ready to let my hair down and enjoy some beach time. It's really exciting to find on-trend swimsuits in plus sizes.

See you on the beach! x

Aussie Curves: Christmas Day

I couldn't have been happier with my Christmas Day outfit. Ever look back at old Christmas photos and wonder...why? Why did I think that looked good? Well, I've been there. And touch wood, I won't ever feel that way about this dress!

I've been absent the last few Aussie Curves challenges. It's so great to be back. I thought being on holidays would free me up to be more active in these weekly posts, but it's actually had the opposite effect! I've been a mixture of too busy, or so relaxed that I can't be bothered! Now that New Years Eve is out the way, I hope to be blogging a lot more!

dress: city chic || belt: city chic || shoes: spendless || flower: lovisa

As a pear shape, I really love a well structured dress across my bust with a flare below the waist. It makes me feel feminine and free.

I hope you had a merry Christmas (ya filthy animals!)

Soph xx
