Aussie Curves: Stripes

If you haven't noticed yet, the ASOS Curve leather skater skirts are turning into outfit staples for me (don't tell my vegan friends!).

I find it interesting that plus size women aren't "supposed" to wear stripes. Something about making us look bigger, blah, blah. Do we believe that because we've been told that, or because it's true? Because whenever I see a fat woman wearing stripes, I don't cringe, or think it makes her look bigger. Who even said that in the first place? 

I found this black sash in my "random drawer" and I tried it as a bow tie with a few shirts. Now I can barely wear a shirt without it.

My Summer Essential: The Maxi Skirt

As the days heat up, I constantly find myself staring into my wardrobe in the mornings, clueless. But the maxi skirt seems to be constantly bailing me out of this mishap. Pasty white legs? Hello maxi skirt. No time to shave? Hello maxi skirt. I also find it the perfect option for work, as they are modest, yet keep you cool. And also, it has to be said - no thighs gluing themselves to plastic or wooden restaurant chairs. Anyone else been there?

In my Peplum Aussie Curves post a few weeks back, I wrote about my lucky bargain find when I popped into Autograph Fashion to kill some time. Since then, I've found myself popping back in on occasion, excited about the possibility of finding other goodies. A few weeks ago I saw this cat t-shirt and fell in love. I didn't buy it right away, but couldn't stop thinking about it and eventually went back for it. While I was there, I also found a few other surprising goodies that appealed to my sense of style: a glitzy turtle ring (the head and legs move!), a ranchy black mesh top (which comes in other colours) and a plain black maxi skirt, which I've been after for a while. It occurred to me that I could wear both tops with the maxi skirt, and it would be the perfect day-to-night combo! Yay!

I'm stealing Tess Munster's style a little bit here with the bra showing underneath the mesh. Sometimes I wear a tank top as well, depending on where I'm going and how modest I want to be. Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus was my favourite song all through high school, and I still go crazy on the dance floor when I hear it. When my bestie told me this cap was for sale at Urban Outfitters I just couldn't resist. And can you believe how adorable this turtle ring is?!

Aussie Curves: Festival

I'm no stranger to festivals. Having said that, the only thing that will ever persuade me again would be The White Stripes announcing they were getting back together and playing Big Day Out. Although....BLUR are headlining BDO next year which is very, very, tempting. I was obsessed with them throughout my university years! I'm still deciding on that one.

Festivals are grotty. The port-a-loos, the line ups, the discomfort. This one time I road tripped with some friends to Groove 'n' the Moo (Bendigo) whilst having the worst Urinary Tract Infection of my life. Experiences I'd sooner forget. But festivals also conjure some of the best memories. Watching Vampire Weekend with my sister. Jumping to House of Pain with my bestie, Janelle. Dressing up as "Future Sailors" (Mighty Boosh reference, y'all) for Franz Ferdinand at Future Music. AMAZING.

I haven't done any extra photos for this post. I've dug up photos from Parklife (so please turn a blind eye to the fuzzy photos), when I got to see Lykke Li, Darwin Deez and The Yacht Club DJs. I'm an indie/alternative girl, can't you tell?

I got this dress from Sportsgirl (size 16) on sale a few years ago. Festival attire is very much boho-chic, which is right up my alley. I wore a feather headdress...

Aussie Curves: Tee

O.M.G.

I saw this t-shirt on Instagram and knew instantly that I HAD TO HAVE IT. I searched this sucker down on eBay and BAM! bought the darn thing. 

This was the original pic I saw online (source). I thought, "This guy! Is AWESOME!" He doesn't let the chubs (or the bastards) get him down. He knows how to party with the best of them. I really admire that kind of freedom and confidence to declare, "Here I am, taking up space. I know I'm fat and I own that shit! Ain't nobody gotta hold that against me!"

So here's me, getting my hands on a bit of that attitude!

Sometimes, as victims of a body shaming culture, we can get so down about our bodies and give it way too much thinking space in our minds. Sometimes you just have to stare your chub down and laugh. Remind yourself that your capacity to be kind, smart, generous and thoughtful is so much more valuable than your capacity to be thin. Word.
